Clinging to the Promise by Mary Beth Cordle is a daily devotional reading book unlike most. It does not have the month and day of the year on each page. Instead, there are sections for different church seasons as well as secular holidays. Occasions in life are also included such as birth, baptism, marriage, death, and everyday living and Biblical principles. This, however, gives you the freedom to choose any page or open the book at random and read what you find. And what you’ll find is poetry, interspersed with Bible verses, full of comfort, meaning, and hope. Consistent in its pages is a message of gentle peace in God, the peace that surpasses understanding and that can only be found through hope in Christ.

What I most like about Clinging to the Promise is how Cordle conveys God’s Word through these easy reading paragraphs about Bible stories and life episodes. But the life episodes are handled in a general way, speaking of worship, or relationships, or our final destination, and not often telling a specific story. I feel this helps to make this book appeal to a wider audience and easy to relate to. Mary Beth Cordle’s resume includes skills of songwriter and musician, dramatist, and medical researcher. The musical talents are especially evident in the verses in this daily devotional. This would be a great gift for new parents, or someone elderly or ill, since the passages are short, but reading something from it every day can be an effective way to build faith in God and form a habit of communing with Him daily.
