Book Review: The Steps

Buy “The Steps

The Steps by Iveta Redliha is a thriller story. I have not read anything by a Latvian author before but I have read a few Russian novels and enjoyed them similarly.

The way that Redliha weaves together the story of several interlocking lives is masterful. I began to figure out the secrets each life held, but not entirely until the end, and even then there was a major part I could not have guessed. The characters are complex and interesting and there are no holes in the plot that I could see.

Essentially, the story is of a young free spirited woman who contracts to be a surrogate mother for a childless couple, to earn money to change her life. Whether you’ll take the side of Leonora, Kurt, Nelly, or Greta is up to you. All display an unsavory side each in their own way. It’s exciting to enjoy their escapades vicariously in this story of what can happen when things don’t go as planned.
