Book review: Plant Based Intermittent Fasting

I enjoyed reading the book Plant-Based Intermittent Fasting by Andrea J. Clark. I have long wanted to be vegetarian, but couldn’t seem to have enough energy while not eating meat, fish and poultry. I have also been interested in intermittent fasting as it seems to have a lot of good science behind it and could be a way to eat fewer calories without suffering. I’ve tried it in the past, eating only from noon to 8 p.m., and that seems to be a good time frame for me. Somehow I got away from that and began eating breakfast again and snacking at night. That extended my eating period to roughly sixteen hours. Clark’s book combines these two desires, for me to lose weight and be vegetarian.

Intermittent fasting works because you eat for instance for 8 hours a day (not nonstop) and fast for 16 hours. This allows your digestive system to fully digest what you have eaten in the eight hours, assimilate it and not store the excess as fat.

My previous job had a lot to do with my weight gain because I was not allowed to eat at my desk except quick finger foods that are not messy and would not deter me from answering the phone. In addition I had to be careful not to get any stains on the papers I was working on. So I had a granola bar every day for breakfast and usually went out for lunch because I couldn’t eat at my desk. Now I am not working outside the home so I can eat when and what I like. That was tough to control at first as I also had time to bake cookies and bread. I plan to stick with this diet for a few weeks and see what happens. I had success with intermittent fasting before so I think it will work. I enjoy beans and vegetables which are prevalent in this diet.

Health, Wellness & Longevity by Steve Dimon reflects a wealth of research. So much more than an Eat This While Avoiding That premise, Health Wellness & Longevity goes through every possible topic including where food comes from, GMOs, macronutrients, water, sugar, grains, types of dietary fat, detoxing, how to eat for health, micronutrients, techniques for healing, and so much more. The appendices include doctor testimonials to prove the efficacy of Dimon’s methods. His expertise comes from the self-learning he undertook after suffering a stroke. Using these techniques he was able to heal himself and he wishes to spread the word and coach others to do the same.

You will be surprised to learn of the healthiness of chicken skin and dark meat. The brain contains a high percentage of fat, as do certain other areas of the body, so to be healthy it is not recommended to adopt a low fat diet. Something else you may not realize is that pharmaceutical companies, lobbyists, and government subsidized farming have a powerful on your health. Profit is the reason your doctor receives free drug samples to hand out to patients—thereby getting them dependent. It’s also the reason the government has paid farmers to grow, or even not to grow, certain crops. Be wise and learn the cultural factors that affect our diets.

Are eggs good or bad? What really causes cancer? Are GMOs and irradiated foods really safe? Steve Dimon will help you to evaluate all this and more in Health, Wellness and Longevity in a user friendly understandable way. I am always looking for ways to improve my health so I enjoyed listening to this audio book. It will provide you with many facts and methods to improve your own health.

Book Review: The Alchemy of Well-Being


The Alchemy of Well-Being is one of the most interesting health books I have read in a long time. Dr. Matthew Potts has created a system whereby one can discover the root of their health and life problems, utilizing a lengthy questionnaire. This questionnaire, called the Code Breaker, delves into areas such as eating habits, thought patterns, relationships and symptoms to come up with a prioritized action plan that can help you revolutionize your life. The Code Breaker will tell you where to start and which chapters to read first for best results, which will help to prevent burnout with implementation of your action plan.

Alchemy was designed for a person like me. If you like to check off boxes and be part of creating your own step by step plan for self-improvement, then it was written for you too. Dr. Potts is even available for one on one consultations either by Skype or in person if deeper work is indicated and desired. As a certified Holistic Health Practitioner and Master Herbalist myself, I can tell you that the nutrition recommendations are right on. I found some areas where I have slipped in my own diligence and so it is a valuable reminder even if you know what you should be doing, to actually do it. The section which I believe will be most instrumental in my own situation is that of overcoming emotional blocks. Through a short series of questions I was able to reveal negative thought patterns and hope to eradicate them through a special technique you will learn from this book. Thanks to Dr. Potts for this groundbreaking, or should I say code breaking, new book.

I listened to this book on CDs, since having recent hand surgery I wasn’t sure how much reading I would be able to do. I would buy this hard copy book even though I’ve already listened to it, because there are so many good nuggets in here that I would like to be able to underline, turn down page corners, and be guided by the table of contents, not to mention to loan it to friends.

Personally, I will be doing my best to pray and read the Bible daily, and get that 3x a week exercise. After the report I got from my doctor a few weeks ago, this was just the kick in the pants I needed to drop some pounds and some cholesterol points. After all, no one else is putting that food in my mouth.

Go Wild: Free Your Body and Mind from the Afflictions of Civilization, by John Ratey, M.D., and Richard Manning, is a fascinating look at optimal health through going wild, or, returning to instinctual behavior. Think of living 1000 years ago, with no grocery stores, cars, or electricity. You would prepare your own food, possibly after catching or harvesting it, and eat what best nourished you. You would walk or run wherever you needed to go, or ride an animal, and have no need to go to the gym after doing the manual work needed to take care of yourself and your family. And when the sun went down, light would be drastically reduced and your body would prepare for a great night’s sleep.

Deviation from these “wild” behaviors and your body’s adaptation to the deviations, postulate Ratey and Manning, are the cause of many common modern afflictions. For example, one type of exercise in a gym could cause repetitive motion injuries, whereas more overall exercise such as walking and doing yard work and housework would work more different muscles and promote flexibility. And Go Wild would not be complete without several chapters on how to use this information. Combinations of “wild” factors are considered such as experiencing nature, and being outside, with the query whether the combination would enhance or improve the effect. Finally, one is advised to find their “lever;” what one change can you effect first that will springboard you into “rewilding?” If desired, you can even visit a rewilding center, such as Rancho La Puerta, where you can be coached to Go Wild yourself. It’s certain to improve your life.
